‘Happy New Year’ illustration by Currier & Ives – 1876


happy-new-year-currier-compare288This illustration of tree branches making up the words, “Happy New Year” was published in 1876 by Currier and Ives. The black and white lithograph was then hand-colored by a series of Currier and Ives production artists (each artist colored one item or items receiving the same color). This image was originally archived by the Library of Congress as a 35mm color copy slide, and then scanned and offered as a free digital file (3b50424u.tif). Our image has been has been re-mastered to improve background white point, properly rotated, sharpened, and enlarged with Genuine Fractals to width of 4000 pixels from an original width of only 1536 pixel). NOTE: Although we continue to place this re-mastered image in the public domain, if you use this re-mastered version, we would appreciate a link to this Web site: ”The Stock Solution”.
