This depiction of Saint Patrick in a stained glass window is from the Cathedral of Christ the Light in Oakland, CA (USA). Saint Patrick was a Christian missionary, who is the most generally recognized patron saint of Ireland. He was born in about 387 A.D, and died on March 17, 493 A.D.

Since we are only a week away from St. Patrick’s Day, I thought I would share a recent restoration of an ornate 1913 Saint Patrick’s Day greeting card illustration of this famous Irish castle. The image was scanned from my personal collection and the color restored (digitally remastered). I also retouched it to remove scratches, cracks, smudges and age spots. This is typically about a 3 hour process.

This back-lighted close-up of a cottonwood tree leaf skeleton shows its vascular system. (After a leaf falls to the ground, microbes in the soil consume the leaf’s soft tissue and leave only the cellulose and lignin skeleton.) The leaf’s vascular network can now easily be seen.
The leaves I’ve photographed were skeletonized through natural decay, and were hand-picked from thousands of leaves. Here’s how this natural process works. Included are several links that describe how you can artificially skeletonize new leaves by boiling them in alcohol, followed by a soaking in NaOH (Sodium Hydroxide or lye). Here is another technique.
