![]() Stock photography, photos: Indians view jumbo monitor Stock photos of On Tuesday, September 21, 2004, the Smithsonian Institution dedicated its National Museum of the American Indian on the Mall in Washington, DC. This new museum celebrates Native American peoples and cultures from North and Central America, including Alaska and Hawaii. The curvilinear limestone building evokes a southwestern rock formation and sits a block from the US Capitol Building, between the National Air and Space Museum and the National Arboretum. The week-long opening celebration included a First Americans Festival, a Native Nations Procession of thousands of Native Americans in traditional clothing, and exhibitions, performances and storytelling.
