The memorial sits in a place of honor on the US National Mall, with the Washington Monument to the east and the Lincoln Memorial and Reflecting Pool to the west. The memorial features twin Atlantic and Pacific pavilions, and 56 pillars representing a roll call of the nation of 56 states, territories and the District of Columbia. Key battles are noted in inscriptions at the base of each pavilion. The Freedom Wall displays 4,000 gold stars for the 400,000 Americans killed during the war.
