In 1470, Ivan the Great commissioned Russian architects Krivstov and Myshkin to replace the dilapidated cathedral dating to 1326. For four centuries the Assumption Cathedral had been the main church of Russia. Here great princes were crowned, local princes swore fealty, tsars and emperors were crowned, Bishops, Metropolitans and Patriarchs were inaugurated, heads of the Russian Orthodox Church were buried, and services were held before military campaigns and after victory. The cathedral houses old murals and a unique collection of icons.
