Stock photography, photos: Slave Shackles - Changuu, Zanzibar

Stock photos of Slave shackles on Changuu Island. Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island is an islet on the west of Zanzibar Town. It takes 30 minutes by motorboat. It measures about mile long and 1/8 mile wide. It was once a prison for disobedient slaves. Gen. Matthews, who constructed a jail in 1893 during the British Rule, later bought the islet. Currently, the islet is now used as a tourist resort popular with snorklers, and known for its giant tortoises which can live to be 100 years old.
