The vigil honors the memory of slaves who perished in these cells and takes place on July 31 prior to the August 1 Emancipation Day. The ceremony is part of the Panafest (the Pan African Cultural Festival) festival which is held biannually in odd-numbered years in Ghana, West Africa.
